Ethereum vs Bitcoin: A 2026 Core Comparison

Bitcoin and Ethereum can be compared by what their networks do, how their native assets work and which risks a holder accepts. A single price snapshot or a fixed portfolio split does not answer those questions.

Compare the same things

How does the network agree on transactions? Proof of work, with miners proposing blocks and nodes checking the rules. Proof of stake, with validators proposing and attesting to blocks under reward and penalty rules.
What shapes native-asset supply? Scheduled issuance toward a 21 million BTC limit under the current rules. ETH issuance and fee burning; net supply change depends on both.
What should a holder examine? Price volatility, custody and the reliability of the chosen transaction route. The same issues, plus the specific application or staking arrangement if used.

Different consensus mechanisms are not a complete ranking of security. A comparison also needs a defined threat: loss of a private key, a faulty application and an attack on network consensus are different problems. A network label cannot describe every risk in a product built around its asset.

The asset and the product holding it

Directly holding ETH, holding a liquid-staking token and buying an exchange-traded product are different arrangements. An exchange-traded share provides exposure through a product's legal and operational structure. It does not put the underlying coins in the investor's wallet. Fees and tracking differences matter, and the investor should check the actual prospectus. Investor.gov's crypto ETP bulletin.

Before comparing returns, write down exactly what is being held and what can be redeemed. Otherwise, a comparison may silently switch between a native asset, a staking claim and a brokerage security.

Why staking yield is not price protection

Suppose an illustrative holding earns 3% more tokens over a year while the token price falls 20%. Its ending value would be 1.03 × 0.80 = 0.824 times its starting value: a loss of 17.6%, before fees and taxes. The 3% figure is invented for this calculation, not a current staking quote or promised return.

Compare returns in the same currency, over the same dates and after the relevant costs. A reward quoted in tokens and a price return quoted in dollars cannot be added without accounting for their interaction.

Transaction costs need a named route

An Ethereum mainnet transfer, an application interaction and a layer-2 transaction need not have the same costs or assumptions. Layer-2 systems aim to scale activity, but the chosen system and bridge matter. Ethereum's layer-2 guide.

For a practical comparison, specify the transfer amount, destination, network, withdrawal route and time of observation. Include any bridge or withdrawal cost needed to complete the intended action. An isolated advertised fee may describe only one step.

There is no universal BTC/ETH allocation implied by these differences. The relevant decision depends on the reader's purpose, loss tolerance, custody arrangements and need to access funds. This comparison explains the choices; it does not supply a personalized portfolio recommendation.
